Metabolic & Performance Testing
Lab-grade data (PNOE metabolic analysis, Styku 3D body composition, and lactate threshold testing) to guide training, recovery, and performance.
What it is
Real, repeatable numbers that anchor your training and rehab. My testing suite has three pieces: VO₂max metabolic testing (PNOE), 3D body composition scanning (Styku), and lactate threshold testing when it's the right tool. Pick the test that fits your goal, or combine them for a complete picture.
How it works
Each test answers a different question: VO₂max (PNOE) measures how your heart, lungs, and metabolism perform under load and gives you training zones and fueling targets; Styku captures hundreds of precise 3D body-shape measurements to track body composition over time; lactate threshold fine-tunes intensity for endurance athletes chasing a specific race or pace target.
Who it's for
- Runners optimizing endurance, pacing, and fueling
- Anyone targeting body composition with real, repeatable data
- Athletes who want training zones based on physiology, not a Garmin estimate
- People returning from injury who need a measurable baseline
- General fitness and longevity, your data tracked over time
VO₂max Metabolic Testing (PNOE)
Breath-by-breath gas exchange analysis, the same technology used in sports-science labs and Olympic training centers, brought into the clinic. Quantifies your aerobic capacity, training zones, and fueling targets. Active test runs 25–30 minutes.
Body Composition Scan (Styku)
A 35-second 3D body scan that captures hundreds of precise measurements with millimeter accuracy. Paired with RMR, the whole visit is under 20 minutes, giving objective body-composition data instead of guessing at a scale.
Lactate Threshold Testing
Available when it's the right tool: lactate threshold testing fine-tunes training intensity for endurance athletes pushing for a specific race or pace target.
What it helps
- Pace and zone calibration
- Fueling and nutrition targets
- Body composition tracking over time
- Return-to-performance benchmarking
What to expect
Pick a test or combine them. RMR + Styku 3D body composition is under 20 minutes. The active VO₂max test runs 25–30 minutes. You'll leave with a written interpretation and a baseline for future scans.
FAQ
Do I need to be a runner to do this?+
No. Metabolic testing and Styku body composition are valuable for anyone targeting body composition, general fitness, longevity, or weight loss, not just endurance athletes.
Which test should I start with?+
If your goal is training zones, fueling, and aerobic performance, start with VO₂max metabolic testing. If your goal is body composition or weight tracking, start with the Styku scan. Many patients do both for a complete picture.
What do I walk out with?+
A written interpretation with the numbers, personalized training zones (from VO₂max), fueling targets, a body-composition baseline (from Styku), and a plan you can train and track against.
How long does the full visit take?+
RMR plus the Styku 3D body composition scan is under 20 minutes total. The active VO₂max test runs 25–30 minutes.
How often should I retest?+
Most people retest every 3–6 months to track progress, recalibrate zones, and confirm the plan is moving the numbers.
How is this different from my Garmin or Apple Watch estimate?+
Wearable estimates are based on heart rate algorithms and population averages. PNOE measures your actual gas exchange breath-by-breath; it's the lab-grade reference your watch is trying to guess at.
How is Styku different from a body fat scale?+
Scales estimate body composition through bioimpedance, which varies with hydration and meal timing. Styku captures hundreds of precise 3D body-shape measurements and tracks change you can actually see.
Who shouldn't do a VO₂max test?+
Certain cardiovascular conditions and active illness are reasons to defer or modify the test. I screen at intake and won't proceed unless it's safe.
Is testing covered by insurance?+
Form & Function is a cash-based (self-pay) practice. I don't bill insurance directly. Fees are discussed up front. On request I can provide a detailed receipt (superbill) you may submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement isn't guaranteed.
